July 19, 2007 – Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has landed a contract with Oi, the largest fixed-line operator in Brazil, to develop an IPTV infrastructure in the country.
The value of the contract has not been disclosed, but the service is anticipated to be launched in Rio de Janeiro by the end of 2007. The contract with Oi is the first in Latin America for NSN, a joint venture between Finnish mobile phone firm Nokia and German Equipment supplier Siemens, according to Sales Director for NSN, Nelson Wang.
Although Brazilian regulation will at present only allow Oi to provide video on demand, the infrastructure ordered will allow the company to ‘switch on’ broadcast IPTV when required. NSN anticipates that there will be nearly 1mn subscribers for video on demand in Brazil and 2.3mn in Latin America by 2010, stepping up to 1.8mn in Brazil and 4.6mn in Latin America by 2012.
