October 24, 2007 – Amino has announced that Chilean telco Telefónica del Sur has selected its AmiNET110 IPTV set-top boxes to deliver its wireless IPTV service to customers.

October 23, 2007 – Orca Interactive has announced that Colombian telco UNE-EPM Telecommunications has selected Orca’s RiGHTv middleware for its upcoming IPTV service.

October 3, 2007 – Telefônica is investing R$ 500mn (US$ 272.85mn) this year in improvements to its broadband network in Brazil to increase coverage and capacity, which will in turn facilitate the deployment of an IPTV service in the country.

October 1, 2007 – Brasil Telecom (BrT) has launched the first commercial IPTV service in Brazil, according to reports in the local press.

July 19, 2007 – Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has landed a contract with Oi, the largest fixed-line operator in Brazil, to develop an IPTV infrastructure in the country.

The Middle East & Africa are the fastest growing broadband markets in the world, with the EMEA region presently accounting for 48% of worldwide IPTV service revenue.  The Middle East and Africa promise significant growth opportunity across the telecoms sector in the next five years, and as competition intensifies, operators are expected to employ attractive services such as IPTV to both retain customers and attract new ones.

Telecom operator will begin in higher income neighbourhoods but sees IPTV as a way to deliver interactive, PC-type services through the television set, targeting lower income users later. Steve Hawley reports

Argentina’s telecommunications market is a little different. For starters, the country developed a large cable penetration with almost no regulatory framework.

According to Marcelo Abreu, a Director at Antel Telecomunicaciones, Uruguay was the first country in Latin America with an all-digital telephone network, since 1995.

El futuro de los medios digitales está compuesto por compañías multiservicios, integración de empresas, aplicaciones vía IP, dispositivos inteligentes y aplicaciones que respondan a las necesidades de interactividad de los usuarios. La conclusión resume las dos jornadas del IPTV World Forum Latin America, que concluyó este miércoles 1 de febrero en el hotel Intercontinental de Río de Janeiro, con la asistencia de 430 personas. Fue el primer evento específico en la región, aunque realizado por la empresa británica Junction.

En los próximos dos años se espera que los servicios sobre IP en América Latina representen ingresos por US$1.000 millones, de los cuales la mitad corresponda a aplicaciones de video y el resto incluya desde compras a distancia (T-Commerce) hasta sistemas de localización de personas.
